Safety Tips for the Road

• Be extra careful at intersections. That is where many accidents happen due to drivers trying to "beat the light."
• If you have conventional brakes, don't slam the pedal. Pump your brake pedal once or twice per second to help maintain steering control.
• If you have anti-lock brakes, apply firm and continuous pressure on the brake pedal.
• Keep away from erratic drivers. One easy avoidance technique is to let tailgaters pass you.
• Always remember that there may be distracted drivers around you, talking to passengers, playing with the radio or using a cellular phone. They may move suddenly and not be aware of your presence.
• Be alert around parked cars. Children could run out from behind one, someone could open a car door, or a car could pull out in front of you.
• When passing another car, get past the driver's blind spot (the left rear corner of the car) as quickly and safely as possible.
• Leave extra space between you and the car ahead of you in bad weather.
• Headlights help you see and be seen at nighttime. Use headlights anytime you cannot clearly see 1,000 feet in front of you.
• Remember the basics: Use your seat belt, lock your car doors, limit loose objects in the car, and remember your ABCs . . . Airbag safety; Buckle everyone; Children in back.
